Each year two million people die from causes related to water contamination and even more for the same reason they get sick. These are the data from WHO, World Health Organization, which has drawn up new guidelines aimed at governments around the world to safety standards and improve water quality.
The water is often contaminated with lead, arsenic and fluoride but implementing the new measures planned by WHO, the situation could improve.
The water suppliers will have the duty to assess the risk of contamination throughout the production chain, documenting the entire process. Not only must do even more attention to the microbial risk but we must keep in mind the risks associated with outdoor temperatures, precipitation and drought.
Maria Neira, WHO Director of Public Health and Environment, said: “Governments have an extraordinary opportunity to make significant strides in public health and safety policies to take effect on water”. We hope that the governments listen.
